F-1: For a person coming to engage in academic study in a full-time program at an approved institution.

J-1: For a person coming to the U.S. as a student, researcher, professor, nonacademic specialist, physician, international visitor, camp counselor, au pair, or summer student in a travel or work program.

A two year foreign residency requirement before a J-1 visa holder may change to another nonimmigrant category or to Legal Permanent Residency exists if

  • the J-1 visa holder's program is financed in whole or part by the U.S. government, or by the government of the person's nationality or country of last residence;
  • the J-1 visa holder was engaged in a field that was designated at the time of his or her entry to be in short supply, or needed, in the person's home country; or
  • the person obtained medical training after January 10, 1997.

M-1: For vocational students who are coming to engage in a full-time program at a recognized non-academic institution. These students:
