EDUCATIONAL

F-1: For a person coming to engage in academic study in a full-time program at an approved institution.

• A person that will be studying at a public elementary, secondary, or adult education institution is not eligible unless hew will be attending the school or institution for less than twelve(12) months and has paid the school district the full "unsubsidized per capita cost" of the education program.
• A person with an F-1 visa is allwed to work part-time, but the work must be essential for his or her support, or to pay for the educational program.

J-1: For a person coming to the U.S. as a student, researcher, professor, nonacademic specialist, physician, international visitor, camp counselor, au pair, or summer student in a travel or work program.

A two year foreign residency requirement before a J-1 visa holder may change to another nonimmigrant category or to Legal Permanent Residency exists if

• the J-1 visa holder's program is financed in whole or part by the U.S. government, or by the government of the person's nationality or country of last residence;
• the J-1 visa holder was engaged in a field that was designated at the time of his or her entry to be in short supply, or needed, in the person's home country; or
• the person obtained medical training after January 10, 1997.

M-1: For vocational students who are coming to engage in a full-time program at a recognized non-academic institution. These students:

• are not precluded from attending public institutions, and may attend a high school, community or junior college, or other post secondary vocatonal or non academic program;
• may not engage in any work until they have completed their studies.
